a couple of thoughts i had when finishing up The Great Divorce.
1. the idea of hell being "less real" than heaven. when i really start to think about this idea, it makes more and more sense. God, who created everything and is the ultimate reality is in heaven, so of course heaven would be a real place. where as hell is thought of as the absence of God so that also makes sense that it would be not as real as heaven. does anyone have any ideas on what "not as real as heaven" would be like?
2. hell being smaller than heaven. i dont really have much to say about this other than i just think its an interesting thought. does anyone else have any comments on this idea?

I thought it was interesting in the book when the Solid person told the Ghost that the apple wouldn't fit into Hell. When I first read this I was thinking that the apple would be too bright, or holy, or something along those lines. Later when we see that Hell is just a tiny crack, then it made more sense and I thought that it was an interesting idea.

The idea that the reason the people from Heaven cannot go into Hell and save people is that they are too big to fit. That God has filled them up some much, that they cannot concetrate on themselves to shirink down into the crack.

Even if they could become self-absorbed enough to fit into the crack of Hell, they would be thinking only of themselves, and therefore would not go there to save someone else.

Interesting question. Only some sort of conjecture would occur on my part if I would try and explain what heaven looks like. I had a somewhat similiar view compared with The Great Divorce. With hell being nothing more than a small crack and heaven being this ultimate fufillment. I have been brought up in a Christianity that stressed dualism. That God and the devil were somehow on a level playing ground and their was this 'galactic' unseen spiritual war going on between the two. Even when I was a youth I could not understand why people would think that the devil is even on the same playing field as God!
